Our client is one of southern New England’s fastest growing fabricators and erectors of structural steel and miscellaneous metals; located in southwest CT. They with contractors and construction management companies to provide the highest quality division 5 services for all stages of construction.
Position Summary The Estimator is responsible for managing the front-end of the bidding process, including identifying bid opportunities, organizing project documentation, setting up bid tracking systems, and preparing detailed scopes of work. This role interfaces directly with the detailing team, senior estimators, and clients to ensure accurate and timely proposal submissions.
Key Responsibilities 1. Bid Screening & Intake - Review incoming bid invitations and project leads (via email, platforms, or direct outreach)
- Determine which projects align with company goals and capacity
- Coordinate with senior leadership for bid/no-bid decisions
2. Project Setup - Download and organize relevant project documents and drawings from plan rooms or GC sites
- Create a new estimate record in monday.com bidding board
- Assign estimate number and create a project folder in Dropbox
- Generate a detailed scope breakdown (structural and miscellaneous) using company-standard format
3. Takeoff Coordination - Submit all relevant drawings and scope notes to the detailing team for takeoff –or– Perform manual takeoffs for small/simple projects directly using Bluebeam Revu or other tools
4. Estimate Preparation - Input quantities and takeoff results into the standard Excel bid template
- Apply standard labor and material pricing rules with guidance from senior estimator
- Coordinate with vendors for pricing (joist, deck, coatings, etc.) early in the bid cycle
5. Proposal Finalization - Review completed bid with senior estimator and incorporate feedback
- Draft and format formal proposal documents
- Submit proposals to clients via email or through their online portals
Required Skills & Experience - 1–3 years of experience in construction estimating (preferably structural/misc metals)
- Familiarity with monday.com, Dropbox, Microsoft Excel, and Bluebeam Revu
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to interpret construction documents (drawings, specs, bid instructions)
- Detail-oriented with strong written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications - Experience with Tekla Structures or PowerFab
- Prior experience in a fabrication or detailing environment
- Basic understanding of labor productivity and steel fabrication methods
