Sustainability Project Manager – Construction Location: Bay Area, CA
Employment Type: Full-Time | Onsite
Position Overview A leading general contractor in the Bay Area is seeking an experienced Sustainability Project Manager to lead environmental performance initiatives on active construction projects. This role works directly with project teams in the field to ensure projects meet sustainability goals, green building certifications, and owner ESG requirements.
Key Responsibilities Sustainability Strategy & Certification Management
  • Lead sustainability efforts from preconstruction through closeout on assigned projects.
  • Manage certification processes such as LEED, WELL, Fitwel, Green Globes, and local Bay Area green building standards (CALGreen, local ordinances).
  • Develop and implement project-specific sustainability plans.
  • Track and report sustainability metrics including energy, water, materials, and waste.
Project Team & Client Coordination
  • Collaborate with owners, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to align sustainability and performance goals.
  • Guide teams through documentation requirements for certification submittals.
  • Review materials and product submittals for compliance with sustainability criteria.
Field Implementation & Oversight
  • Support onsite waste management and recycling/diversion programs.
  • Monitor indoor air quality plans, low-emitting materials compliance, and erosion control measures.
  • Conduct jobsite audits to ensure sustainability practices are being followed.
  • Train field teams and subcontractors on sustainability requirements.
Reporting & Compliance
  • Prepare sustainability reports for clients and internal leadership.
  • Maintain documentation required for certification reviews and audits.
  • Stay current on evolving California and Bay Area environmental regulations.
Qualifications
  • 3–7+ years of experience in sustainability, construction management, or green building consulting.
  • Experience working on commercial construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of LEED (LEED AP preferred) and other certification systems.
  • Familiarity with CALGreen and Bay Area sustainability standards.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work closely with field and office teams.
  • Ability to work onsite at project locations across the Bay Area.
